Dillan and Kaitlin
Dillan was purchased at auction
with a severe wound on his hind
leg.  He has been nursed back
to a full recovery and currently
under training with excellent
show potential.
Sadie
This mare was abandoned by a
drug addict.  She had foundered
and could hardly walk when she
came to us.  With special
attention from our farrier, she is
much more comfortable and
walking (even running!) much
better.
UPDATE
She now has the go ahead from
the farrier for riding and has
begun training.  Sadie is a real
sweaty and should prove to be
great with the kids.
Helping Horses Help Children.
Sacred Heart Horse Rescue of Middle Tennessee specializes in the use of rescued
horses in an Equine Facilitated Learning program for children who suffer from
chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses, children with emotional and mental
challenges, and special "at-risk" children.

The rescued horses are rehabilitated and used in a program to help the children
gain a special sense of self-esteem, accomplishment, empowerment, and an
overall feeling of joy and satisfaction. These are invaluable benefits to children who
are faced with a chronic and/or life threatening illness.  Other benefits may include
improved communication skills, improved motor skills, as well as a sense of being
respected and having a better respect for others.  All of these benefits may be
achieved through the child's interaction with a horse!

Equine Facilitated Learning is also sometimes referred to as Equine Assisted
Growth and/or Learning.  The children are actually learning important life skills and
how to overcome challenges to accomplish the tasks put before them in the
program.  The horse is the facilitator in this process.
About our Horses...
Each horse has come to us with their own needs and has shown remarkable
improvement.  Some may work wonderfully in our Equine Facilitated Leaning
program, others may have great adoption potential, and some may even have great
show potential  Of course, there will be some that will just make great companion
horses in need of a good loving home.  We hope to better the lives of both the
horses and the children who come through our facility!
About our Children...
Our Inspiration...
Our ranch was inspired my Angel Heart Farm in Nolensville, TN.  They have been
offering Equine Assisted Therapy to children with chronic or life-threatening
illnesses since 2003.  The founder, Tracy Kujawa, has won the Ford Motor
Company's contest, "Women who Innovate. Women who Inspire."  Our goal is to
take her program two steps farther by incorporating the use of rescued horses and
by widening the scope of the children we serve.

There are some wonderful organizations who offer this type of service, but still not
enough.   Horse enthusiasts have no doubt about the benefits of the horse/human
bond.  It is one of our missions to convince the health professionals to really take
advantage of Equine Facilitated Learning for the betterment of the children.
Sacred Heart Rescue, Inc.
Our children are your children.  They are wonderful children that suffer from a
chronic or life-threatening illness, an emotional or mental disorder, or special
"at-risk" children.  These children really enjoy spending time on the ranch with the
rescued horses (and the dogs).  Some of them love to ride, some love to groom
the horses, some like to help at feeding time, some like to dish out treats, some
just like to love on them and let them know we care, but they all deserve the
benefits that Equine Facilitated Learning can provide.

During a session, the children are asked to perform certain tasks with the horse
in an effort to build communication skills, develop a bond with the horse, gain
respect from the horse, and learn to respect the horse as well.  As tasks are
accomplished, the children may also gain self respect, confidence, self-esteem,
improved motor skills, and improved communication skills.  You may read more
about Equine Facilitated Learning and the benefits on our
ABOUT US page.
